Notes from 11/3/02 Events Committee Meeting
I. Review of Recent Actions
A. AAPJ Bus trip up north:
Net loss to AAPJ of $275. AAPJ sold 20 tickets, and 18 took the bus trip. However it was politically a success in developing a statewide network. People at demos in both Prescott and Flagstaff were very happy to see Phoenicians. Next time AAPJ needs to plan the trip further in advance and emphasize pre-trip ticket sales.
B. Second Bush Demo
Victor came 1 =BD hours early and handed out "Right to Life" for Iraqis fliers to numerous individuals entering to hear Pres.Bush. One individual came back, looked at the flier and told Victor, "like this is 'totallywrong.'"
Various critiques and ideas: One participant remarked that some TVcoverage hurt the movement. It marginizalized us. Some channels focused on a few demonstrators using profanity at straight middle class people, people that many TV viewers identified with. Another participant remarked that the conduct of a few involved in "liberating" a bottle of some sort of alcohol from a van fell far below the non-violent standards we aspire to live and portray. Another participant remarked about the lack of AAPJ peacekeepers at the event. It was suggested that even at demonstrations AAPJ are merely co-sponsors in, AAPJ should have its own peacekeepers, even if othergroups don't want peacekeepers for their groups. It was further suggestedthat at each major event AAPJ have one or two AAPJ press spokespersons available for press interviews. These individuals will have a hand out to give to the press. When AAPJ members see a reporter they will introduce the reporter to the press spokesperson.
C. McCain Speaking at Changing Hands Bookstore November 1
25-30 demonstrators showed up, including a strong contingent from Women in Black. Demonstrators with signs, and the AAPJ bullhorn, stood at the nearby streets. The protest had great coverage by channel 12. McCain came out and spoke to one demonstrator who carried a sign stating "McCain, Shame on You." Inside McCain read from part of his book and when he read "the price of silence is too high," Tom spoke up and asked McCain to tell theaudience the truth why the UN monitors left Iraq in 98. Tom was escorted out of the bookstore.
II. The Charlie King MLK Day Concert
Last year the Charlie King concert made AAPJ $2,000. City of Tempeis planning in bringing Charlie King in for a workshop for MLK day. That evening, Saturday, January 18, 2003, Charlie King (and Karen Brandt) will do a concert at the 1800 seat auditorium at McClintock H.S. in Tempe. Profits from the concert can go to AAPJ. The City of Tempe and AAPJ will split the $1400-$1600 cost of bringing in Charlie King. AAPJ will also have to pay for cost of police and security at the concert. The event will cost AAPJ about $1,000 to sponsor. The Black Student Union at McClintock H.S. and other schools will be given the opportunity to sell the $10.00 tickets and keep $5 for each ticket. City of Tempe will publicize the event in their mailings. The concert could help publicize AAPJ. Victor is going to head up AAPJ ticket sales. Further discussion with the city is needed to discusssuch matters as: (1) will the city keep returns on the concert tickets it sells at the door etc.; and (2) can the City put the AAPJ website address on the publicity it puts out on the event. Potentially this fundraiser can raise up to $4,000 - $5,000. Advance ticket sales will be the key. Tickets could be sold as Holiday gifts.
III. The Butte Mountain Sign
Stan will follow up with individuals who volunteered to do some initial work on the sign. The sign will be placed directly no the ground. Oneview is that he sign has to be at least 20 feet by 80 feet. The "A" letter on Butte Mountain is 60 feet long. One view is to place a semi-permanentsign on the mountain. Another view is to place a structure on the mountain upon which temporary signs can be placed. The group discussed the need to keep the message short on the sign. Some ideas include: "No War", "Justice-Not War," or "War" with a slash through it. There was some discussion on what can be done with the sign to prevent damage from vandals. Events Committee hopes to have more concrete plans developed at next meeting. (In addition, two tiered plastic vinyl banners will be made, with AAPJ's name, and another saying something like, Keep the troops home, no war on Iraq." The AAPJ web address will be on the signs.)
IV. Mill and University Ave. Vigils
Last Monday eight people showed up for the vigil. Many are new people who do not ordinarily attend vigils. The weekly vigils will continue at Mill and University Ave between 5 and 6 p.m on Mondays. We need regular and consistent vigil participants. Scotty will e-mail weekly reminders regarding the vigils.
V. Possible Veterans Day Action
If enough anti-war veterans are interested, anti-war veterans may march in the Phoenix or Tempe parade.
The next meeting will take place at 3:30 Sunday 11/10/02.
